Chapter 27

Another after show party, feeling an awkward disassociation from Seth I tried to sneak off to peace and solitude upstairs. Shutting out the revelers I took an angst ridden breath. The lights were off in his bedroom but from underneath the door, a glow illuminated the room as voices and music echoed loudly through the walls.

“I beat you in here.” Seth’s sultry voice startled me. He covered our separating distance before I could speak and lowered me onto the bed.

“Hello. Party outside.”

“I know. I want them to leave already,” he muttered as he held himself over me. An electric current flowed from his hand as he ran it down the back of my leg until it disappeared under my skirt. “I can’t get enough of you,” he said huskily causing shivers to run down my spine.

We both turned as we heard a female voice outside his door. Softly she rapped, calling out, “Seth, you in there? Baby, come out here and be with me.”

Hearing Seth’s name on another woman’s lips broke the mood. Quickly, I scooted from beneath him, away from his touch. “Your fans are calling you,” a strangled whisper caught in my throat covering my betraying jealousy as I struggled to overcome the noise of the party. I was the one who walked away. I didn’t want to be left on that bed if he chose to go.

We were arguing, or trying to, but we had an audience of friends.

“I can’t believe you are taking six hours of classes, working afternoons with Devon this summer and still helping out a couple of nights at the law firm,” Seth said under his breath.

“Yeah, well I had to take the classes to get in the upper division nursing program. My hours at the law firm are less in the summer and painting houses with Devon sounded like some non-mind challenging fun after studying Pathophysiology and Pharmacology every morning,” I responded quietly.

“Hey, Seth did you drop your fall classes yet?” Rick asked.

“Huh?” I blurted clueless.

Seth recoiled from the disbelieving look I gave him.

“Yeah, I’m taking the semester off so we can book more out of town gigs. I just don’t have time for both.” He reached for my hand when no was looking and squeezed it.

He had less than thirty credits before he had his bachelor’s degree. Taking the semester off was news to me. Especially considering Seth had already chosen our next class together - a mid-level music class: The history of rock and roll. I had already signed up for it to complete my last arts and humanities requirement.

He was reaching for the life he wanted. I was staying in the life I had.

While he brushed his teeth, I went to my own bed for the first time in weeks. The cool sheets welcomed me and I stretched my legs, feeling the cotton move against my body.

Seth’s soft footfalls alerted me that he was coming. “Do you want to sleep up here tonight?” His eyes took me in, wallowing in the bedding.
